In the Lowell family of Riverside, an unwritten law holds that a daughter must sit at the center of the court or the wealth will scatter. But Seraphina carries the memory of another life. In it, she trusted Madeline, followed her toward a promised white rabbit, and was sold into a trafficking ring, dying forgotten in a shack. Now five years old again, she cannot speak, yet she shoves her sister away and clings to her grandmother.

Madeline answers every rejection with gentle, wounded grace, and the family begins to doubt Seraphina. In a house of brothers, lawyers and vault keys, the silent child must guard herself from the one person everyone else adores.
