For five years Sandra has worked herself to exhaustion, scraping together every penny to ransom her husband Joe Masseria from the black market. Their son grew up in boarding nurseries, deprived and neglected, until years of malnutrition left him with leukemia. He died in agony on the way to the hospital, biting off his own tongue before they reached the doors.

Cradling his ashes, Sandra goes to the black market with the borrowed treatment money and overhears Joe speaking with his men and his sister-in-law Sofia Rizzuto. He has stayed away to protect Sofia, keeping Sandra in the dark, and calls his cruelty fairness. A screen over the river reveals the treasure Sofia's husband won for her and the amusement park built for her son.

When Joe finally calls and comes home, coaxing her toward a family dinner, Sandra feels only hatred. She resigns from every job and leaves with her son's ashes, no longer willing to play along with his lies.
