Jane Miller is preparing to end her life abroad when a reporter asks about her greatest regret. She tells of the quiet boy her family adopted when she was seven, the boy she insisted on marrying despite everyone's objections, and the marriage that ended when he turned to her best friend of twenty-five years. The interview airs, and Julian Vance rushes to stop the procedure, overjoyed to find her alive. Jane, her memory eroded by a brain tumor, does not recognize him until a nurse and a yellowed notebook remind her: this is her ex-husband.

She agrees to return with him, and the past closes in. Her mother turns away; her old room has been given over to a child's toys, and a boy named Leo drives her out with a thrown toy car. Sarah Reed is there too, wearing the airs of the house's mistress. When Jane finally asks why Sarah betrayed her, Sarah answers only that she fought for her own happiness. Julian vows to make amends and return the family company, but when Sarah threatens divorce, he chases after her, leaving Jane behind once more.
