Three days after Nora's death, William Schmidt is called to identify her body. He tells the crematorium to burn her and call him when it is done, then arrives hours late with lipstick on his collar. When the worker hands him her urn, he lets it slip, grinds her ashes into the floor with his shoe, and warns her to beg at his mother's grave or he will dig up her corpse.

Nora's soul is bound to him, forced to follow as he drives away. On the phone is Ivy Schmidt, the adopted daughter who once tried to destroy her. William swears that if Nora were truly dead he would throw a three-day party and light up the city in celebration. At a bridal boutique he slides a diamond ring onto Ivy's finger, and together they plan to invite Nora as guest of honor to the wedding she always dreamed of.

William still believes her death is a trick, never doubting that she caused his mother's fatal heart attack. Only Nora knows the truth, and only she remembers that Ivy was the one who murdered his mother.

Three days after my death, William received the call to identify my body.

He casually tightened his arm around the woman sitting in his lap and spoke into the phone. "If she is dead, she is dead. Cremate her and call me when it is done."

My body was pushed into the roaring incinerator. Once I was reduced to nothing but bone and ash, the crematorium staff called him again.

He clicked his tongue in deep annoyance.

"I got it. I am on my way."

By the time William Schmidt finally arrived, two hours had already passed.
