From the back cover

When Melanie Grant was fifteen, a U-turn made for a cake she wanted killed their parents, and her little brother Elliot Cooper was left with a mind that regressed to that of a seven-year-old. Melanie buried their mother and father alone, refused the orphanage, and kept him with her through school and work, later adopting Noah Cooper to help care for him. Everyone assumed she would eventually send him away.

Ten years on, when Noah burns his hand pouring Elliot hot water, Melanie shoves Elliot to the floor and tells him he should have died. Noah admits he burned himself on purpose and spells out what Melanie gave up: mathematics, a place at a top university, offers abroad. Elliot, starving and feverish, is scolded by a doctor at 106.1 degrees; Melanie loses a major client and Noah's birthday celebration. Believing he is the cause of their unhappiness, Elliot jumps from the fifth floor and wakes in a cast, while Melanie turns back from an investor to take him to the hospital.

He still cannot understand why she weeps, or what his sister has truly sacrificed for him.

Everyone believes she simply cannot bear to lose all her family members at once, but they assume…
