Chloe is the adopted daughter in a family where her sister Jessica is the biological child. Jessica tells her she must obey or be cast out, and their parents shower Jessica with meat, new uniforms and praise while Chloe gets leftovers, hand-me-downs and silence. One morning the family drives off without her, leaving Chloe to walk alone; a neighbour she trusts lures her into his house, and she is thrown into a dark basement, where she dies. Her spirit drifts back to watch the family carry on as if nothing is missing.

At dinner an empty chair goes unnoticed, and Jessica shreds Chloe's only doll while muttering that if Chloe were truly dead, she should not come looking for her. Chloe realises her sister may have known what leaving her alone would bring. As the family packs for a weekend camping trip, Chloe's spirit reaches out, but her parents only assume she chose not to come, and the door closes without a single glance into her room.

And I trailed behind them like some stray dog.

I wanted to run up and have them hold my hand too.

But all I got was Jessica snapping impatiently, "I don't want to go to school with Chloe."

So Dad hit the gas, leaving me standing there as they drove off with Jessica. I was left alone to wait for the bus.
