A woman books a first-class ticket home for the holiday after regular flights sell out. When she reaches her seat, a four-year-old boy is bouncing on it, and his mother, Tiffany Gao, refuses to move him, insisting the child should be indulged and accusing the woman of having no compassion.

The confrontation escalates. Tiffany summons Mrs. Davies, the chief flight attendant, and claims the seat is hers through an employee family ticket bought by her husband, the flight captain Julian Gu. The airline's system confirms Tiffany's name, and Mrs. Davies orders the woman to economy class. Then the woman recognizes Tiffany's necklace as the one she found in her own husband's jacket, meant as an anniversary gift. When she tries to unbuckle the boy, Tiffany slaps her, and air marshals restrain her as the cabin turns against her.
