Cora has been unable to speak since childhood. When her cousin Lydia's fiancé, Jasper, falls into a coma, her parents arrange for Cora to marry him instead. For three years she cares for him devotedly, until he finally wakes. His first request is a divorce. He believes Lydia was the one at his bedside all along, and he will marry no one else. When a friend points out that it was Cora who cared for him, Jasper shrugs it off: he knew, but he cannot have a wife who does not speak.

Lydia twists every gesture and message against Cora, and her parents, bound by an old debt to Lydia's late parents, take Lydia's side. Silenced and cast aside, Cora signs the divorce papers. Even Jasper, once her childhood friend, lets go of her hand. Left with nothing, she turns to Dr. Wesley and asks for hypnosis therapy to erase her memories, hoping it will restore her speech. Asher, her sign language teacher's son, agrees to sign the consent form as her family.

When Cora wakes, she looks at the man by her hospital bed and asks, perplexed, who he is. The man before her is stunned.
