At an investor banquet, Tanner Clarkson's secretary, Willow Thorne, throws wine at an investor and insults him. To keep his funding and secure the company's IPO, Tanner drugs his fiancée, Katherine Leigh, and pushes her toward the investor, telling her that Willow is young and innocent and that he will make it up to her once the company goes public.

When Katherine wakes, she agrees to a deal with Davin Slade, the man who rescued her from the investor John Vaughn the night before. In the hotel lobby, she finds Tanner and Willow together; Willow's false sympathy turns the crowd against Katherine, and Tanner refuses to believe her. Katherine ends their engagement, and Tanner warns her she will regret it.

At the office, Willow has taken over Katherine's room and smashes the trophy from her college research award. When Tanner arrives, Willow blames Katherine for her bleeding elbow, and Katherine insists she is not responsible.

To ensure the company's successful IPO, Tanner hands me a glass of spiked wine. Then, he pushes me to the investor, expecting me to extinguish his flames of rage.

His eyes are filled with feigned hesitation as he says, "Willow isn't like you. She just graduated—she's pure and innocent. Stop fighting it, Kathy. I'll make it up to you once the company goes public."
