Jane Francis and her sister Linda are orphans chosen for adoption by two families: the wealthy Quinns and the working-class Smiths. In their first life, Linda went to the Quinns and Jane to the Smiths. Linda was treated as a tool to ward off bad luck, then cast aside after Old Mrs. Quinn died, and she took her own life. Jane, unable to fit in with the Smiths, was returned to the orphanage and followed her sister in death.

Now reborn on the day of the adoption, Jane insists on switching places. She becomes Jane Quinn, determined to protect Linda, who is taken in by the Smiths.
