From the back cover
Spencer Vance is pulled into a blind date with Victoria Sterling, daughter of the richest man in D.C., and to choose a greeting gift he attends an exclusive charity gala. There he spots a vintage Romanov Emerald necklace, but Victoria's assistant Brad shoves him away, warning that nothing in the city is touched without the Sterlings' permission. When Spencer calls Victoria, she hangs up on him, and Brad's taunts turn the crowd against him.
Victoria arrives with bodyguards and dismisses Spencer as a waste of space. He answers that he was forced into the engagement too, and that he would rather marry a barista than an heiress with no class. She responds by declaring an Open Bid on the necklace, raising the price to twenty million, then one hundred million, while Brad and the crowd demand proof of funds.
Spencer does not back down. As the auction house waits, he reaches for his phone, and the confrontation over money and power is left hanging.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
All I knew was that her last name was Sterling, and she was the daughter of the richest man in D.C.
To pick out a decent greeting gift, my Director pulled some strings and got me into an exclusive charity gala.
During the preview, I spotted a vintage Romanov Emerald necklace. Just as I reached for the display case to get a closer look, a guy in a cheap suit shoved me hard from behind.
"Hey, pal! If you value your life, keep your hands off the merchandise."
I stumbled, straightened my jacket, and turned to glare at him.
