From the back cover

Louis lands in the ER with acute internal bleeding after drinking to save Cecilia's company. His mother, whose knees are ruined from factory work and who cannot read street signs, rides a Greyhound for twelve hours from Ohio to care for him. Unable to leave his IV drip, Louis asks Cecilia to collect her from the terminal. Cecilia promises, then vanishes; a message from her assistant Felix arrives with a photo of the two of them watching the sunset at a hillside resort.

Louis finds his mother at noon the next day, her heels bloodied from a night wandering downtown, still clutching handmade insoles she quilted for Cecilia. At the penthouse, Cecilia's first words concern the imported Milan rug beneath his mother's feet. She offers hotel money and asks that his mother leave, then blocks the door to demand Louis stay and cook for Felix.

Louis recalls his mother selling her home to fund Cecilia's failing startup. Now he must decide how much more he will bend.
