From the back cover

Fred Sherman paid out of his own pocket to build a well for his grandfather's village, Hopeville, laying pipes into every home and letting the whole village use the water for free. When heavy rain contaminates the well, the villagers blame Fred, accusing him of cutting corners and pocketing money, and demand he pay for a new well.

Led by Peggy Mitchell, the villagers barricade his eighty-year-old grandfather in his house and throw bricks into the courtyard. Village chief Henrietta Nelson tells Fred to just pay up. Fred refuses, and when he tries to leave with his grandfather, the crowd blocks the gate, still shouting about the twenty dollars they claim he charged each household.

Fred has given the village years of generosity, yet now he faces a choice: keep giving in, or let them haul water from the river again.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

The villagers assume that I cut corners when I had the well built, so they call me up to force me to pay for another well.

When I refuse, they barricade Grandpa at his house and throw bricks into the courtyard in the middle of the night.

I rush back to the village and see debris scattered everywhere. I say nothing.

But Grandpa, an 80-year-old, gets so worked up that he shouts, "Where is your conscience? My grandson put in more than 80,000 dollars of his own money to build the well, and he didn't charge any of you for that!"
