Cathy has made it to the second interview for a merit-admission internship under department head Charlie Gilbert, a spot that would let her skip the usual six-month rotation. Her mother, Sara Bingley, brings home suits for both daughters: a sharp navy one for Molly Pitcher, and an oversized black one from the clearance rack for Cathy, insisting she will grow into it. Cathy says nothing and spends the week shut in her room, filling pages with a design draft.

The day before the interview, Sara spills water on Cathy's computer, destroying the draft. When the acceptance list appears, Molly's name stands under the special-admission internship. Molly says their mother pulled strings; Mr. Gilbert says Sara brought him a diploma and an impressive design draft.

Cathy confronts her mother, who calls the swap a sister's duty and tells her not to be selfish.
