It is harvest season, and Mia calls her ex, Mark, to ask a favour. He hangs up, then texts that they are not getting back together and that he knows she only wants his bodyguards to pick corn again. She keeps working the field, puzzled that Mark, clueless for three years, has suddenly seen through her.

Then a tractor arrives: Mark rides up with a dozen bodyguards in black suits, insisting he was merely passing by. They strip off their jackets and pick corn in the heat, while Mark fumes at Mia's wandering eyes and bickers with her over lunch, the tractor and her refusal to return to the city. She asks to hire his bodyguards instead of him.

Three years of breaking up and making up have left Mia unsure how serious Mark is. This is their tenth breakup, three months on, and he is staying somewhere nearby.

Then he texted me instantly.

[Not getting back together. Don't look for me.]

[Don't think I don't know. You just want me to bring my bodyguards to pick corn for you again.]

I blinked, sitting on the ridge of the field, reading the message three times.

Finally, I got up and continued picking corn.

I couldn't figure it out.
