Dr. Ethan Vance wakes on the very day the zombie horde attacks the Compound, remembering a past life in which his wife Sarah, captain of the Gifted Squad, drugged him and threw him to the dead after accusing him of stealing Liam's research. This time, Sarah has taken every Gifted to celebrate Liam's birthday, leaving the Compound undefended.

When the Commander begs Ethan to retrieve them, he refuses, knowing Sarah will not listen. Mike, the logistics chief, volunteers instead, but returns wounded and infected, turned away by Sarah, who calls him heartless. As the Apex Zombie drives the horde against the failing gate, Ethan contacts the Alliance Military and prepares to leave with an untested serum.

On the road he meets Chris, captain of a neighbouring outpost, who blocks him on Sarah's orders, convinced Ethan is a fraud. Ethan realises Sarah has reincarnated too, and that she has deliberately cut off the Compound's last lifeline.
