From the back cover

When a child accidentally ruins the designer beanbag chair of her father's new girlfriend, her father forces her mother inside the velvet slipcover and stitches it shut. The child, Daisy, is held back by security as her mother's muffled pleas fade into silence. Her father dismisses her sobbing, calling it drama, and leaves with the other woman.

Days later, on Daisy's birthday, her father returns and tosses her a cheap teddy bear, demanding her mother come out of hiding. Daisy points at the beanbag and whispers that her mother is bleeding. The neighborhood guard, Joe, discovers the gruesome truth and calls the police. Daisy's grandfather is contacted, but her father refuses to believe any of it, threatening Joe's job.

When her father returns with Tiffany, who claims to be pregnant, he strikes Daisy for hurting the woman. Tiffany's smile is the same one she wore the day Daisy's mother was sewn in, when she whispered that neither Daisy nor her mother could win against her.

Inside the book Opening excerpt
