On the day their daughter Mia turns five, Chloe sees a photo posted by her husband Julian's mistress, Amber: a selfie of the two of them in bed with a little boy asleep between them, while Julian had texted Chloe that something came up at the office. Chloe likes the post, then calls her divorce lawyer.

Julian arrives home at two in the morning and asks her to wake Mia for a birthday celebration. Chloe refuses, and when he accuses her of being suspicious, she tells him to sleep in his own room. She no longer cares about the family rituals she once insisted on, and Mia's birthday wish was not to see her father anymore.

When Julian offers to drive Mia to school, the back seat holds another child's belongings and a framed family photo of Amber and Leo. A call from Leo sends Julian speeding away, leaving Chloe and Mia behind. Amber's mocking texts follow, and Julian blames Chloe for the fallout. As she packs, Chloe finds old love letters from a younger Julian, then hears his threat over Amber's disappearance. She burns the letters and stops waiting for him.
