Jamie's mother is dying, and she makes him a promise: every day he must draw one sun in his notebook, until he has filled it with thirty thousand. Only when the last sun is drawn may he come and find her. Then she sleeps a long sleep, and men in blue uniforms carry her away under a white sheet.

Jamie keeps the promise. He draws his first crooked suns while a neighbour, Mrs. Dawson, brings in a tall, thin woman with cold eyes and a cigarette: Vivian Reed, the sister he never knew. Vivian takes him to a cramped apartment, gives him a dark storage room, and leaves stale crackers outside his door. Granny Ellis, the neighbour, scolds her for it, and Vivian's answer is bitter: her father gambled and was beaten to death paying for this boy's treatment, and her mother hated her for it.

So Jamie sits in the dark, counting suns. One, two, three. Still such a long way to thirty thousand.
