From the back cover
Jeremiah arrives home on New Year's Day with bags of gifts, expecting a warm family gathering. Instead, his brother-in-law Calum Russell hurls the presents outside and demands that Jeremiah sign an adoption termination agreement. Calum reveals he has long known Jeremiah was adopted, and that he only pretended to be a friend to keep Jeremiah's salary flowing to the household. Now, with a demolition supposedly coming, Calum wants Jeremiah gone before he can claim a share meant for Calum's unborn child.
Jeremiah's parents, Leon Stark and Bertha Sloan, and his pregnant sister Eliza Stark stay silent, refusing to take his side. Calum threatens to divorce Eliza and force her to abort their son unless the family casts Jeremiah out. Jeremiah realizes the demolition was only an excuse he once invented to surprise Eliza with a new house, yet no one will listen to him.
What his family does not know is that Jeremiah has just won a lottery of 200 million dollars. Suppressing his anger, he signs the agreement and walks away, leaving them to their scheme.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
He says, "I pretended that I didn't know you were adopted because you used to help support the family's finances. But now that the house is about to be demolished, we will get a huge compensation for it. I have to kick you out, or you'll be taking my son's share!"
I look at my parents and my sister in confusion, but none of them take my side.
They just look at me with disgust and tell me to be grateful that they raised me for so many years.
