Eight years after fleeing her marriage while pregnant, Nina Jerome crosses paths with her ex-husband, Howard Quinn, in Kappa City. His friends mock her for working as a cleaner, while Howard insists she return home, unaware that she now has a husband and daughter waiting for her, and that her son Charlie calls Ian Larson, chairman of the Larson Group, his father.

Howard recognizes Charlie as his own son and tries to claim him, but Charlie rejects him, insisting his father is Ian. Howard's anger flares, and when Charlie bites him, he slaps the boy, then leaves to tend to Cheryl Smalls and her crying son Jason. He warns Nina he will return for Charlie in two days.

At a gala, Nina encounters Howard again, and he coldly orders her to leave. Their stay in Kappa City is meant to last only seven days, after which she hopes their paths will never cross again.
