For eight years, Thomas Callahan has waited for Lauren to keep her promise of marriage. On the balcony of their penthouse, Thomas traces the carving Lauren made years ago, a vow to marry him. The ring box feels like a lead weight. When Lauren returns from helping Parker, Thomas tells her they are finished. She accuses him of using his family to pressure her, unaware that the Callahan gala will announce his renunciation of inheritance to join a classified government research initiative.
Eight years of waiting have reached their end, and Lauren has no idea what is truly about to be announced.

This concert, and specifically the fan-request segment, was the final chance I was giving us. My hand was shoved deep into my pocket, fingers white-knuckled around a velvet ring box. It was a pre-arranged signal with the event organizers: as soon as the song request ended, the lights would stay on us, and I would ask her to marry me.
