From the back cover
Nora is the fiancée of Matthew Jackson, heir to the Jackson Family of Empire City. On the night Susan celebrates her birthday with fireworks by the river, kidnappers seize Nora and demand half a million dollars. Matthew laughs, tells them to kill her and come for a reward, then hangs up. Abandoned and tortured in an abandoned factory, Nora dies before dawn.
Her corpse is sold whole to Matthew himself, who arrives by helicopter to cut out a kidney for the terminally ill Susan. He performs the surgery with his own hands, refuses to let anyone suture the body, and orders it disposed of. He never turns the face over. Only Carl, his friend, dares to speak Nora's name, and Matthew answers with the old accusation: she killed his sister. Yet Susan now wears the amulet Madam Jackson once gave Nora, and Nora, watching, can do nothing but grieve.
