Nicholas Stephens crosses Clara Henson's name off the class graduation trip roster, telling her she is retaking the SATs and does not get to go. Her sister Pat Henson and Nicholas are both geniuses; Clara is ordinary, and she only wants a quiet life teaching at an ordinary college. But Nicholas, who once ran wild with her on the hillsides, now forces her into the science track, rips up her trip booklet and warns her that without the top university she cannot count on being with him.

At dinner Nicholas orders the broth swapped out and tells her she has no right to eat at his table; Pat feeds her food hiding chili peppers, and Nicholas, who never forgets anything, brings her mango juice though she is allergic to mango. When Clara chooses karaoke over going home early for Pat's sake, Nicholas drives off with Pat, and Clara finds the door bolted against her. Through it she hears Pat, her father and her mother all agree to leave her outside as a lesson.

Locked out with nowhere to go, Clara spends the night on the stairwell steps, under a broken light that flickers like the stars back home.

A snicker came from behind me.

"Her? Get into the top university?"

"With her scores, she couldn't get in even if she retook it ten times."

My sister shot the boy a glare and took my hand with a smile.

"Getting into the top university isn't hard, Clara."
