For sixteen years, Aria Lin has believed her childhood friend Jack was something more. They grew up together, and for the past eight years they have shared a bed, an unspoken understanding she took for love. Then, after a night together, Jack hands her a morning-after pill and mentions, almost casually, that he is getting engaged on Sunday to Rachel Zhou, the class beauty he once rejected.

Jack asks Aria to be Rachel's bridesmaid and to help design the wedding invitation, even as he pulls her back into bed. When she tears the invitation apart, he calls her crazy, insists he never liked her, and tells her to pack up the cheap matching trinkets she bought and leave. In their old class group chat, Jack announces the engagement and jokes about the pill, while Rachel tags Aria with thanks. Muted by Jack, Aria calls him, only to hear Rachel's voice and Jack's answer: he never even thought of Aria as a woman.
