He Brought His Pregnant Mistress to My Operating Table

From the back cover

In the back-room where she stitches the Family's wounded, a surgeon's table is the hardest slot to get. Wounded men are smuggled in from territories away to put their lives in her hands alone. On the busiest day, a man bursts in carrying a pregnant woman drenched in blood, begging her to save his wife from an ectopic pregnancy.

The surgeon looks up and sees Dario Conti, her husband of nine years, the man who told her yesterday he was handling business out of state. He kneels before her with another woman carrying his child, and the room goes silent. She tells him to clear the table and bring the woman back, then says they will settle the rest once she is alive.

Left alone with Dario, she expects shame. Instead he asks whether she ever wondered why they ended up like this, blaming her for the work that consumed her, and speaks of Gianna with tenderness.
