When a typhoon shuts down the coastal bridge, Sally is trapped in a hospital lobby during a prenatal checkup, bleeding and begging her husband Jared to return and sign her emergency surgery consent form. He refuses, choosing instead to drive through the storm to comfort Cora, his frail childhood friend who is frightened by the thunder.

After losing the baby alone, Sally wakes in the recovery ward to Jared's furious call accusing her of faking the emergency. Nurse Jenkins takes the phone and tells him the truth: Sally has just undergone an emergency D&C after a severe hemorrhage and incomplete miscarriage. Jared finally arrives—but he wheels Cora in first, her ankle wrapped in an ice pack, and asks that she be examined while Sally's risk documents go unsigned.

Discharged to an empty home, Sally finds Cora's suitcases in the foyer and the nursery she and Jared decorated stripped of the crib, her prenatal records ruined by rain. Jared sets down a mug of porridge and tells her to eat.

That was when Cora—Jared’s childhood sweet, frail best friend—called him, sobbing into the receiver that the thunder was scaring her to death.

He abandoned me, driving through a city submerged in gale-force winds and downpours just to hold her hand.

Meanwhile, sitting in the lobby, I clutched my bleeding lower abdomen and begged him over the phone to come back and sign my emergency surgery consent form.
