Ethan is famously cold and arrogant, yet he always keeps a pair of white sneakers in his car for his wife, Olivia, because of her old ankle injury. He kneels to change her shoes and jokes that he has spoiled her beyond self-care.

When his childhood friend Chloe, whose family has just gone bankrupt, moves into their home, Ethan gives Olivia's sneakers to Chloe at a charity gala. He calls them just shoes and assumes Olivia will not mind. At home, Chloe wears them, uses Olivia's ointment, and takes her place at the breakfast table. Ethan tells Olivia to cut Chloe some slack.

At the launch of Olivia's rehabilitation project for injured children, her name is moved to the appendix and Chloe is named Charity Ambassador. Olivia asks where her name is, and Ethan answers that she has him.
