At the county records office, Lucy Pruitt's parents stand at the signing counter with the savings passbook they built over a lifetime, ready to buy their daughter a wedding house. Then Stewart Dickerson pulls Lucy aside and tells her he intends to put the property in the name of Melinda Fox, his ex-girlfriend, until her brother's wedding is over. Melinda is already waiting at the window, ID in hand.

Lucy refuses. She snatches back the down-payment receipts and tells her parents they are not buying the house and she is not getting married. Stewart seizes her wrist and orders her to apologize to the clerk; her mother's passbook hits the floor. Lucy accuses him of planning to use the school-district registration and a bank loan to take her parents' money.

Outside, Stewart adds Melinda to the family group chat, where she weeps and blames herself, while relatives flood Lucy with messages. Her mother pleads for a notary and an IOU; her father refuses. When the renovation company calls about the next day's start date, he answers for her: they are not buying the house.
