Elena Whitford has tried to marry Simon Callum twenty-seven times, and each attempt has ended the same way: with Simon rushing off to care for his stepsister, Roxie Callum. This time, at the civil office, Roxie doubles over with stomach pain just as their number is called, and Simon carries her away without a backward glance, telling Elena they can always come back another day.

Elena's mother, a doctor, and her cousin Molly try to help, but Roxie refuses medication and the hospital, insisting only Simon can care for her. Simon shields Roxie and accuses Elena of caring more about a piece of paper than about someone who is sick. With the cutoff time approaching, Elena sends a message to a number she has not contacted in a long time, and a reply comes back at once.

As the minutes run out, Elena tells Simon that if they miss the deadline, she will not marry him at all.
