On the night before Walter Geoffrey's gastrectomy, surgical nurse Morgan Ernest is asked by her fiancé, Dr. Edric Peterson, to mentor his childhood friend Wanda during her rotation. Wanda wants to give the fasting patient warm milk, and Morgan knows the cost of taking the blame: in her previous life, the patient aspirated, and Edric's report and Wanda's tears left Morgan dead in a stairwell.

Now Morgan refuses the cup. She broadcasts the strict NPO order, photographs the bedside signage, and demands written authorization from Anesthesiology and the Nurse Manager before any oral intake.
