From the back cover
Tom Hardy loses a bet and, as a careless joke, sends his wife Natalie Johnson's mother all the way to Tinsel Town to pick the season's freshest lychees. The journey takes more than fifty hours on a hard train seat, and the exhaustion kills her. Even in her final moment she clutches the lychees, asking the attendant to deliver them to Natalie.
While Natalie kneels before her mother's casket, Tom is peeling lychees for his secretary Ava Turner, the childhood friend he grew up with. He dismisses the death as a misunderstanding, blames her mother for not taking a plane, and tells Natalie to make hangover soup for him and Ava. He seems to have forgotten that her mother once gave him her entire life savings.
Heavily pregnant and past her breaking point, Natalie no longer demands explanations. She sends him divorce papers, but Tom comes home anyway, drunk and with Ava, and hands her a bag of blackened lychees. One thing she cannot forgive is that they caused her mother's death.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
Because of losing a bet, Tom Hardy had the heart to tell my mother to go all the way to Tinsel Town. He wanted her to pick the freshest lychees of the season.
As a result, my mother had to spend more than fifty hours trip while sitting on a seat train. The journey was too much for her. In the end, she lost her life because of sheer exhaustion.
Even when she was in her final moment, she clutched those lychees tightly, asking the train attendant to deliver them to me.
