In their hometown, a man must stomp grapes into wine for his future bride, and she must drink it to accept him. Chadwick has kept his bottle for twenty-eight years, and he and Suzanne Landon have finally returned home for the Cherry Blossom Festival, where the wine is meant to be opened.

But Suzanne drinks Finley Graham's wine instead, in front of the whole village, and agrees to pray with him at the church. Chadwick is left standing alone, his own bottle untouched on the altar, while Ivan Banner urges him to speak. He stays calm, refuses to play Finley's game, and sends a message he has sent before, asking whether someone is still willing to marry him.

As the banquet ends and Suzanne and Finley disappear up the mountain, Ivan asks whether she has forgotten that it is Chadwick's birthday.
