Nine years after a fire destroyed his hands, Elton wakes from a phantom ache and overhears his mother, Marianne, confessing on the phone to their neighbor, Mrs. Rita, that she hid his passport and set the blaze herself, so he could never leave her. When he opens his eyes, he is back at his desk on the day his visa arrived.

This time, Elton refuses to hand the envelope over. Marianne's gentle pleading curdles into tears and grievance, and Mrs. Rita scolds him for hurting his mother, but he keeps the documents locked in his bag and tells her he leaves tomorrow regardless. That night he scans his identification, alerts his advisor, Professor Helena Ross, installs hidden cameras and a smart smoke detector, and asks the manager, Mr. Frank, to store the solvents.

Returning to his room, he finds his drawers searched and his mother waiting in the doorway, asking whether he is locking her out.

Nine years after my hands were burned into twisted, useless claws, I woke up in the dead of night from a throbbing, phantom ache. That was when I heard my mother talking on the phone out in the living room.

"Rita, you know it hasn't been easy," she murmured into the receiver. "Taking care of him all these years... a brilliant piano prodigy, reduced to this..."

Then, she let out a low, soft chuckle.

"Hard on me?" she continued, her voice devoid of warmth. "Do you have any idea how long I waited for that day?"
