Marcus signs the papers without protest, certain she is only acting out; he has always believed she cannot live without him. He answers Nina's call and leaves to help her find a lost kitten, while Nicole packs, sells the gifts she gave him, and keeps an appointment at the hospital. When her mother begs her to ask Marcus to represent her sister Sophie, who was assaulted by her boss, Nicole goes to his firm and takes a number like any stranger. Nina walks past the queue into his office, and Nicole's number is never called.

It was three in the morning. I sat on the sofa, listening to the sound of a key turning in the lock.

Marcus pushed the door open, a rare smile on his face as he carefully placed a pink hair tie on the entryway table.

When he saw me, his brow furrowed instinctively before smoothing out again.

“Why are you still up? I told you not to wait for me when I’m working late.”

His voice faltered when he saw my lit-up phone screen.
