During the holidays, a woman returns home to spend time with her family. Her mother brings out a bowl of persimmons meant for the Sherman family, warning that outsiders may not take from it. When she reaches for one, the room falls silent and her father berates her for stealing, pointing out that there are only eight persimmons for nine people. She hands hers to Vivian Andrews, her parents' goddaughter, then calls her husband, Kevin Garrett, to tell him not to bring the holiday gifts.

Her mother grows frantic, insisting it was only a persimmon and urging her to apologize to Vivian and pay her 500 dollars. Looking around at the appliances, the house, and the clothes she paid for, she laughs. She notices her mother's gold bracelet on Vivian's wrist, and her mother declares she gave it away and can do as she pleases. Her father later slaps her for ruining Christmas.

She recalls how her parents once spoiled her, and how Vivian has since replaced her in family portraits and holiday dinners. Treating her as an outsider, they leave her no reason to keep making a fool of herself.

Everyone begins fighting for the persimmons. I decide to grab one for myself as well.
