From the back cover
On her first wedding anniversary, Camille's husband Nigel Park brings home a pregnant woman named Alice, calling her a cousin who has fallen on hard times and asking Camille to care for her. As he gives orders about her food and sends Camille out for a cherry cake, fragments of commentary appear in Camille's mind, mocking her as a supporting character in someone else's story and hinting that Nigel never loved her.
Nigel's coldness deepens: he slaps the phone from her hand when she offers to arrange a termination, sleeps on the sofa to spare Alice's feelings, and dismisses the anniversary cake she baked. Reading the letters in his drawer, Camille learns his careful habits were never for her. At the hospital she books a same-day abortion with Penny Woods.
If she is cast as the villain no matter what she does, she will stop living so pitifully.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
On our first wedding anniversary, my husband came home with a woman who was six months pregnant. He introduced her as his cousin, someone who had fallen on hard times, and asked me to take care of her.
I was just about to agree when fragments of imaginary commentary floated through my mind:
[She's just my 'cousin'. Uh-uh, that's a cliche.]
[Poor supporting female character! A maid by day, the husband's bedwarmer by night.]
