From the back cover

Harrison Brooks treats his life like a high-security fortress. His fiancée, Harper, has spent three years stopping at the gatehouse of his Lake Forest house, handing over her ID and waiting for clearance before the barrier lifts. On the night of torrential summer storms, she drives forty minutes through the rain with a thermal container of her mother's beef stew, only to watch his new executive assistant, Sloane Mercer, stroll past the guard without signing in. Sloane, she learns, is registered under a Homeowner profile.

When Harper calls him from the rain, Harrison dismisses her as a paranoid housewife with too much free time. She drops her engagement ring into the stew and hands it to the guard. Later, feverish in her apartment, she listens as he tends to Sloane's flooding car instead of her, and by morning she has seen Sloane's photo from his living room sofa. Harper accepts a year-long historic preservation project in Charleston and returns to the estate for her blueprints, where Sloane greets her in the slippers Harrison once gave her.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

1

Harrison Brooks treated his life like a high-security fortress.

We had been together for three years. We were engaged. Yet, every time I went to his house in Lake Forest, I had to stop at the gatehouse, hand over my ID, and wait for the guard to call him for personal clearance before the barrier would lift.

I loved him. I accommodated him. I never complained.

On the night of the torrential summer storms, he had casually mentioned over the phone that the weather had shut down all the delivery apps in his area, and he hadn't figured out dinner yet.
