From the back cover
Eight years ago, Rachel climbed out a second-story window and broke her leg to run away with Bill, a poor young man her parents despised. He swore he would give her the life she deserved. Now thousands depend on him, yet on the day they fall apart, a video call reaches her from her younger self, still standing outside City Hall with the hopeful boy Bill once was. Rachel shows them the divorce papers in her hand and the actress Tessa clinging to Bill's arm.
Bill calls the divorce temporary, a lesson to shield Tessa from scandal after Rachel exposed her to the press. He wires money and promises they will remarry once the gossip fades. But Rachel carries the scars of their marriage: a burn from a basement fire, a stillbirth suffered while Bill was in Milan with Tessa, and years of broken promises.
When her younger self asks whether Bill truly loves someone else, Rachel tells her to go home, where her parents are waiting. At the house, Bill is cooking the same soup she drank while recovering, and nausea rises in her.

Beside her, the younger version of Bill shifted nervously, his eyes wide with a mixture of hope…
