For three years, Serena has loved Adam, a college student fourteen years younger. On her thirty-sixth birthday, he turns away from her kiss, and she finds his messages to a lingerie salesperson saying her wrinkles disgust him and he no longer feels anything for her. He forgets their anniversary, which was also her birthday.

She remembers how the eighteen-year-old Adam once confessed to her with roses, promising every birthday would be their anniversary. Now he answers her with "Whatever," ignores her bleeding hand, and lets a girl's voice message play in their home. When her mother calls about marriage, Adam looks away in guilt.

Serena offers him the new phone, then calmly ends it: this dinner is their last. Adam agrees at once, saying he never planned to marry her, and leaves. She stays behind with the traces of him, deciding that spoiled things should not be kept.
