From the back cover
After praying for her son Robert, Maisie Scott is thrown from her carriage and wakes to find her family gathered at her bedside. She decides to tease them by pretending she has lost her memory, expecting comfort and worry.
Instead, her mother Christine Roth and her husband Jeremy Scott seem relieved. They tell her she is only the adopted daughter of the Liddell family, that Amber Liddell is the true heiress, and that Robert must now call her Aunt Maisie. Robert runs happily into Amber's arms, and Amber accuses Maisie of neglecting him during the accident, though Maisie knows she shielded him and took the injuries herself.
Realising this family has long wanted her gone, Maisie declares she will sever all ties with the Liddells. Jeremy orders her to stay away from home and from her son, leaving her to wonder what, if anything, still binds her to them.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
I've gone to the church to pray for my son, Robert Scott. On the way home, my carriage is overturned because the horses suffer from a shock.
When I wake up, I look at my family gathering around my bed. Then, I decide to pull a prank on them.
"Sorry, but who are you?"
I do my best to suppress the smile that threatens to appear on my face. I want to see how my family is going to comfort me now that I have "amnesia".
