When William Davis, the mayor's son, collapses with cardiac arrest in a hotel, the only surgeon in the city capable of performing the thoracotomy he needs is Dr. Quinton, head of cardiothoracic surgery at Central City Hospital — and she is being pinned to the floor by security guards.

Her own intern, Lydia Sharpe, accuses her of carrying a scalpel and anesthetic, claims she wished the mayor's son dead, and tells the general manager, Zachary Campbell, that Dr. Quinton's old conflict with Mayor Thomas Davis makes her a suspect. Zachary refuses to call the hospital director, Lawrence Johnson, and orders every other doctor in the area summoned instead.

With the patient hemorrhaging and minutes running out, Dr. Quinton remains the one person who can operate — if she can make anyone believe her.
