From the back cover

On a honeymoon in the frozen Rockies, a wife is left stranded at a high-altitude rest stop when her husband Elias drives off to take her best friend Chloe down the mountain for altitude sickness. He tells her to wait or find a cab, then mocks her and reminds her that Chloe introduced them. She calls Julian, an old contact who leads mountain expeditions, and he picks her up in a heavy truck and drives her into town.

At the hotel, Elias has canceled their suite and booked two standard rooms. Chloe is wearing her silk pajamas and using her face cream; Elias defends it as basic decency. The wife throws the items away, and Elias leaves with Chloe, furious. Alone, she accepts a long-standing transfer order to lead a project at the London office and plans to leave in three days.

A blizzard closes the mountain pass, stranding everyone in town. When she drags her suitcase to the restaurant, Elias coldly asks what stunt she is pulling. She tells him she is going back to the city.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

I stood frozen, then called Elias. It took seven tries before he answered. “Chloe’s got severe altitude sickness and won’t stop vomiting. There’s no clinic here. I have to take her down the mountain now. Wait there or grab a cab into town.”

I looked around. Twelve thousand feet up, surrounded by snow peaks. No cabs, just a few freight trucks stopping for water. “Elias, you left me here alone?”

Silence. Then his voice, sharp. “Chloe introduced us. Shouldn’t we treat her well? Basic decency. Besides, she’s your best friend.”
