Everyone in the family knows Angelo Rizzo is becoming the new Don of Brucklin District — everyone except Lila Bennett, his fiancée. To Angelo, she is a burden, a childish half-wit stuck to him like gum in hair. So Lila decides to surprise him by travelling to Brucklin ahead of him, to prove she can be smart. But at the bus station she confuses Brucklin with Mannattan and boards the wrong bus.

In Mannattan, a grand wedding procession blocks the street. The veiled bride in the limousine is weeping: she is not the Don's real fiancée, only a substitute forced to take the place of the girl who ran off. Lila realises the runaway bride is herself, and the two women exchange clothes and a platinum ring so Lila can take her rightful place at the altar.

Yet when the groom turns away at a word from his man, Lila is left waiting once more — as she has waited ten seasons for a cherry tree to bear fruit.
