From the back cover

In the delivery room, a wife named Isla is told by her husband Declan Lancaster that he is cheating on her and wants a divorce before the baby is born, so he can make things official with Ruby. He sends a photo, and she stays strangely calm, knowing the innocent girl he is protecting was once her patient, treated for AIDS. Declan has a congenital heart condition, and an infection like that could kill him.

Declan arrives at the hospital with divorce papers just after her difficult delivery, showing only irritation that she went against his wishes. He warns her not to use the baby to trap him, threatening to make sure the child grows up miserable. She signs, and he leaves to join Ruby.

A doctor notices her bleeding hand and urges tests, but Isla already knows the truth: Declan is HIV-positive, and the virus is attacking his cardiovascular system. She waits quietly for the moment his own choices catch up with him.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

I was in the delivery room, in labor, when my husband called.

“Isla,” he said, his voice calm and matter-of-fact. “I’m cheating on you.”

“Let’s get a divorce now, before the baby is born.”

“Ruby is young. She can’t handle the scandal and the gossip.”

“I have to make it official with her.”

“And don’t even think about using the baby to trap me.”

“You of all people should know how painful it is for a child to be born unwanted.”

I looked at the photo he sent me and nodded, my heart strangely quiet.
