Lily-Anne is a sickly child whose illnesses arrive with her parents' paydays. When her mother becomes pregnant again, the fine for a second child is more than the family can afford, so she leaves the girl on the doorstep of her Uncle Joe and Aunt Clara, who cannot have children of their own. Lily-Anne waits for hours under the southern sun before they find her.

Aunt Clara is furious, certain the child was dumped to dodge the fine, and orders her husband to take her back. Lily-Anne wants to go home, yet the only home she can picture is filled with her father's drunken rages and her mother's bitter complaints. She clings to one peaceful night.

Then Aunt Clara offers her peanut brittle and sweet and sour ribs, and the girl begins to wonder whether she is being sent away at all.

“There’s cash in the register at the supermarket where I work,” she continued, her words tumbling out in a rehearsed rush. “Tonight, after my shift, I’ll bring the money home. You just tell everyone you stole it. I’ll call the police, they’ll come get you.”
