From the back cover

At an auction, Veronica Marshall and her mother-in-law Agnes Bachert win an emerald necklace for 30 million dollars. When Agnes asks to charge it to her husband Otto Garrett's account, a woman named Ruth Coleman storms over with Janette Saccone, slaps Agnes, and declares herself Otto's legal wife. Ruth claims Agnes is the other woman and a thief, while Janette says she is engaged to Veronica's husband, Clement Garrett.

Agnes, who has a heart condition, is humiliated on stage as Ruth grabs the microphone and the crowd turns against them. Veronica shows Agnes' pink diamond ring as proof of her marriage, but Ruth seizes it and produces a genuine black-and-gold credit card that the officer confirms is real. Otto does not answer his phone, and Ruth claims he blocked Agnes and planned the confrontation.

When Veronica invokes the Marshall family, Ruth accuses her of impersonating Ms. Marshall. As Janette attacks her, Silas Lambert, the auction house manager, appears and greets Ruth as Mrs. Garrett, offering her a private room.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

The auctioneer signals for payment. To make things easier, Agnes suggests charging it to my father-in-law Otto Garrett's account.

But just as she says this, a flashy middle-aged woman and a young woman storm over. The younger woman, Janette Saccone, grabs Agnes' arm while the middle-aged woman, Ruth Coleman, slaps her hard.

"I knew something was off!" Ruth snarls. "You're a nasty old bitch for destroying my family and trying to seduce my husband! I hope you suffer!"

I rush to shield Agnes. "Are you okay?"
