Daisy exists only as a cautionary tale for her brother Tyler. When Tyler develops a junk food habit, their mother fills a bottle with weedkiller and leaves it on Daisy's nightstand. Daisy drinks it, and as the poison burns through her, her father Tom races her toward the ER, only to be stopped at a sobriety checkpoint. Their mother tells the officer Tom is drunk, laughing while Daisy seizes in the backseat and telling Tyler this is what recklessness looks like.

At the checkpoint, Tom is pulled from the car for a blood draw, and Tyler has no license to drive. A family friend, Mike Miller, stops and offers to take Daisy to the hospital, but their mother blocks the door, claiming she has never seen him. As Daisy's breathing fails, Tyler begs on the asphalt, and Tom demands to know what she truly wants. Her answer is that it is all his fault.

I remember when Tyler first started middle school and developed a junk food habit. My mother decided to fill an old Gatorade bottle with concentrated weedkiller and left it sitting right on my nightstand where it couldn’t be missed.

I drank it. The agony that followed was a white-hot serrated knife twisting in my gut, sending me heaving and thrashing across the floor.
