From the back cover

Since moving into Lewis's apartment, Cara has paid him rent every month without fail. When she drains her account for her mother's hospital admission fees and asks for a few weeks' grace, he refuses, insisting the money is a rainy-day fund and that she must not look like a freeloader. She transfers the last of her balance, and the next day finds her belongings boxed up in the living room.

Lewis moves her into the cramped utility room so the guest bedroom can go to Isabel, a college junior staying rent-free. For Isabel he carries bags and sets up a vanity; for Cara he has only rules, and any mention of money is silenced. A torn scarf, forgotten donuts, and a dinner she cannot eat mark how far she has been pushed aside.

Then, at the bus stop, his sedan pulls up to the curb.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

"Cara, I charge you rent to foster your financial independence. You wouldn't want people thinking you're freeloading off your boyfriend, would you?"
