From the back cover

For eight years, Ruby and Robbie have been the couple everyone believed would last. They have talked of marriage, and he has promised her a proposal she will never forget. Then, one Valentine's night, she waits alone in a restaurant past midnight and learns from a post on her phone that Robbie has married someone else.

At home she overhears him tell his friend Allan Woods that he wed Lucy, his first love, because her anxiety has spiralled and she says a home with him is her only hope. He insists he will divorce Lucy once she is stable, certain Ruby will wait and understand. Robbie is now someone else's husband, yet he still calls Ruby baby and begs for another chance.

When Ruby asks what will happen if Lucy's illness never improves, his answer falters. A phone call to Lucy, full of the same tender promises, reveals where his heart truly lies.

Because, as he explained, for his first love—who struggled with anxiety—marriage was her greatest wish in life.
